This unit is the capstone Design Studio unit and aims to provide students with the opportunity to synthesise prior learning, within university and the workplace, through the production of a final year project. Within this unit students develop confidence and the ability to work with minimal supervision in preparation for graduation.

Rationale

NB INFORMATION IN THIS UNIT OUTLINE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT OF SEMESTER
Design Studio in the final year allows you the opportunity to further immerse yourself in the development of your own individual project, product or range. Design Studio 6 acts as stage two of your final year project, and forms the prototyping and completion phase. During this unit you will complete your final year project and will have the opportunity to apply to present your work in a graduate show.

Aims

This unit is the capstone Design Studio unit and aims to provide you with the opportunity to synthesise your prior learning, within university and the workplace, through the production of a final year project. Within this unit you will develop your confidence and ability to work with minimal supervision in preparation for graduation.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Establish an individual design identity
2. Apply professional standards of presentation, decision making, planning and organisation of work strategy within the development and completion of an extended project
3. Utilise and apply knowledge and skills gained during the workplace learning unit where applicable
4. Use a high level of design skill and creativity in the development and presentation of a design portfolio
5. Apply expertise in the final presentation of an extended project
6. Display independent learning habits and a capacity to work effectively with minimal supervision
7. Contribute in meaningful ways to self and peer assessment.

Content

This unit continues work on the design and development of a product or range culminating in a graduate show. Sourcing and selection, effective application of technology, product/range development and production (as applicable to your final year project), oral and visual presentation, show production, styling and marketing.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Supervised and unsupervised studio practice, critiques and staged tutorials and presentations to monitor and provide feedback on your progress towards self-initiated, negotiated goals.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Ongoing assessment of project work.You will receive regular feedback on your progress towards your self initiated project goals. Weight 0%

Assessment name: Presentation #1
Description: Description:Project Development Presentation #1 and participation in peer critique.
At the start of semester two you will be asked to present your portfolio and final project work in progress and to clearly identify a plan of action and self-initiated deadlines for project completion (in line with assessment deadlines). The work presented will include both finished products and resolved prototypes, and you should be at a point where the majority of problem solving has taken place. You will also engage in peer critique.

Assessment name: Presentation #2
Description: Project Development Presentation #2 and participation in peer critique. You will be asked to present your portfolio and final project work to date, including a significant proportion of finished products and some fully resolved prototypes (negotiated dependent on product/range being produced). At this stage you will be expected to present partial completion of portfolio (in whatever format has been agreed on a case-by-case basis). You will also engage in peer critique.
