Rationale

The sequence of six Design Studio units is fundamental to the course and focuses on the integration of design principles and specialist practical skills and understandings. Design Studio in the final year allows you the opportunity to further immerse yourself in the development of your own product or range. Design Studio 5 acts as stage one of your final year project, and forms the research and development phase of the project, accordingly within this unit you will formulate your final project, for prototyping and completion in Design Studio 6.

Aims

This unit aims to provide you with an opportunity to synthesise your prior learning. In order to successfully design and prototype a product or range it is essential that you develop a project plan, thoroughly research and analyse your proposed market, and develop a conceptual framework for your project.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Use research to establish a viable market for an innovative product or range
2. Organise and communicate information to a professional standard
3. Apply design skills and creativity to thoroughly develop designs in response to your selected market
4. Present original design ideas effectively, utilising relevant technologies
5. Display independent learning habits and the capacity to work with minimal supervision.
6. Apply critical, creative, analytical and reflective skills through design development, problem solving and peer review.

Content

This unit addresses content such as the design and development of a product or range for a specific market including market research, design and product/range development and prototyping (as appropriate to your final project). There will be ntensive 'master classes' comprising studio and design classes.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This final year unit employs a number of different teaching and learning approaches: supervised and unsupervised studio practice provide you with the opportunity to implement skills developed in previous Design Studio units and the workplace learning unit whilst critiques and staged tutorials and presentations are designed to monitor and provide feedback on progress towards self initiated, negotiated goals.

OH&S
Please consult Blackboard for information regarding OH&S for the unit.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Faculty Assessment Information
To access complete Creative Industries Faculty Assessment Information please refer to the Blackboard site for this unit.
Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is given within supervised studio classes and at key points within the development of your extended project. Weight: 0%

Please note: Design Studio 5 is a studio based unit and your engagement is critical. Should your non-participation during class times be such that the ownership of the work is questionable then you may be asked to undertake a set production exercise under supervision.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

You are expected to attend and participate fully in all scheduled classes. Further, in order to gain a passing grade in this unit, you must attend and participate fully in a minimum number of studio and design 'master classes' during the semester.

Assessment name: Presentation
Description: (Formative and Summative) Development Presentation 2. Towards the end of the semester you will be asked to present your final project work to date. At this point you will be expected to have identified a clear concept and market and have designed and developed your product/range to a high level of resolution. Portfolio of evidence should include extensive research, idea development and problem solving, along with interim design presentation work. You will be asked to reflect on progress to date and to lay out clear goals and deadlines for completion of the project in Design Studio 6.
