This unit focuses on the logistics and skills required in the industry, for the distribution and selling end of the fashion cycle. It will develop your understanding of the importance of international and national wholesale selling or order taking, through to fashion companies going direct to the final consumer.
The unit seeks to bring together the professional, creative and real world opportunities available in fashion industry selling strategies, with the business planning and sustainability strategies required for profitability.
You will acquire skills and knowledge that will support and enhance your understanding of current and future trends in fashion business planning, entrepreneurial acumen and sales logistics, through practical application of the practices and strategies researched.

Rationale

Fashion designers, marketers or fashion entrepreneurs can only create a sustainable business if their collection or product range sells in quantity to the public. Anyone interested in entering the industry will have to understand the logistics, timing and activities required to get fashion ranges to the final customer and the implications this process has for sales and business planning. In this unit students would be advised to have completed Introduction to Fashion KFB103 to gain prior knowledge of the fashion industry and its aesthetics.

Aims

This unit aims to introduce you to the complexities of wholesaling fashion and evaluate current industry strategies.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. identify, analyse and evaluate fashion supply chain logistics and their impact on a designer's, marketer's, retail buyer's or entrepreneur's business planning;
2. research current industry practices, planning and tools used for successful fashion wholesale and retail sales, and communicate appropriately within professional contexts;
3. explain the research, processes and infra-structure required before setting up industry strategies;
4. produce appropriate documentation for fashion products.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
- An introduction to supply chain logistics and their importance for business sustainability;
- An overview of the history and theory of the business of fashion and an introduction to the current strategies and practices;
- Planning for wholesale;
- Industry documentation for the fashion industry;
- Careers and business opportunities within the fashion industry.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

You will attend a series of lectures (including guest speakers from the field), associated tutorials and workshops. There will be opportunities for you to attend industry events or fairs to further enhance your understanding of the ragtrade and its logistics. You will also undertake independent study and research which will be supported by tutorials and staff supervision.

An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit, on time, whatever work you have done.

You will receive ongoing formative feedback on your progress in this unit during tutorials and discussions throughout the semester. There will also be one-on-one consultation times during tutorials for feedback prior to assessment due dates. Several workshops will be made available for those students requiring computer assistance.

Description: (Summative & Formative) You are required to interview an industry expert involved in the supply chain of fashion and present a PowerPoint presentation in tutorials. This will outline their roles, expectations and the importance of industry strategies for their business planning.

Assessment name: Business Package
Description: (Summative & Formative) You are required to research and prepare a professional package with appropriate documentation (that is expected by agents, buyers and retailers) for the successful selling/order taking for a specific fashion label. This will be a computer generated package addressing industry standards.
