Rationale
The fashion industry is a fast paced, complex and sometimes chaotic system that requires continuous research and analysis for profitability. While design is an important component of the system, sustainable business strategies, industry and consumer trends drive the success of any fashion brand. By developing knowledge of the complexities of the fashion industry and its supply chains, this unit will provide a base for students wishing to pursue the subject of fashion as a major, second major or minor.
Aims
This unit aims to provide the learner with a foundational knowledge of the complexities of the fashion system through business, industry, supply chain, marketing and media strategies.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Apply a basic knowledge and understanding of the international, national and local fashion industries.
2. Research and analyse industry trends and their potential for sustainable business and communication practices in the global marketplace.
3. Analyse the potential for sustainable careers in the contemporary fashion system.
4. Apply written, oral and visual communication skills in the presentation of an analysis and evaluation of a contemporary fashion business/label.

This unit addresses content such as:
- Fashion business and communication models
- Supply chain logistics
- Sustainable business practices for the fashion industry
- Careers in the fashion industry
- Trend spotting for future business success in the fashion industry
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Lectures, tutorials, guest speakers, research (including fieldwork) and reports on national fashion businesses will enhance the 'real world' approach to this unit.
