Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This unit is a practical introduction to the multidisciplinary skills of music theatre. It has been designed to complement training in acting, dance or music. Due to the popularity of the music theatre genre, students studying in these areas may need to acquire complementary skills in the other two disciplines.

Aims

This unit aims to provide you with introductory-level skills in your choice of two of the following: singing, dancing and acting. You will work only in the two areas that are not part of your current or prior training.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Apply vocal and articulative skills - solo and ensemble.
2. Apply basic technique and performance skills to a short dance work.
3. Understand the building blocks of dramatic process and the actor's role within it.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:

  • Singing: Music and the body, rhythm, and ear training. Periods and styles of music and improvisation. Some basic music reading and writing skills.

  • Dancing: The fundamentals of mechanics, musicality, spatial awareness, dance communication, energy and focus, and character portrayal, through the learning of a short choreographic work.

  • Acting: A range of workshop activities, including improvisation exercises, self explorations and monologues.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The basis of the performance work is both ensemble and autonomous requiring you to tackle the double challenge of self-management as an individual artist and as a member of an ensemble.

If you are not studying music, dance or acting in your course, you should consult with the unit coordinator prior to the commencement of the semester regarding which two disciplines areas to select for study in this unit.

Note that this unit will not be offered if enrolment numbers are below 25.
