Rationale

NB: Information in this Unit Outline is subject to change prior to commencement of semester

In order to negotiate a pathway into the professional arena, the concept of 'successful performance' is prevalent at every entry point, from first contact, interview or audition through to performance. The term performance needs to be understood in its broadest sense to embrace all aspects of life that have an effect on your eventual career choices and successes. In order to approach this holistically, a range of subject areas will be integrated into a programme that will develop specific practical, psychological, interpersonal and physical skills necessary for transition into professional industry practice. These skills are best developed in a range of contexts to enable you to be adaptable and responsive to the needs of the dance industry as you develop and become a confident dance practitioner, no matter the field of specialisation.

Aims

The intention of this unit is to equip you with the necessary skills to enhance performance in all areas of your study so that you can look forward to a fruitful sustained career in the local, national and international marketplace. It will enable you to develop, utilise and adapt your skills for artistic expression in various performing domains be they theatrical, educational, digital or site specific. Generic attributes developed within this unit include the following: development of life-long learning skills; time management skills; research skills; recognition of the value and promotion of truth, accuracy, honesty, accountability and ethical standards; effective communication skills.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Understand a range of performance management skills (including self-awareness, motivation, optimal attention, interpersonal skills, career progression and networking).
2. Develop, implement and critically reflect upon a plan for psychological/performance enhancement techniques in a performance environment.
3. Develop dance specific entrepreneurial skills through engagement with business practices. For example, marketing, grant writing, and the formulation of a business plan.
