This unit includes a practical introduction to philosophies and practices in dance education. The areas of choreography, performance and appreciation are explored as students develop basic teaching and reflective practice skills. This unit is appropriate for students planning to teach dance in the primary, secondary, community or studio context.

Rationale

Dance experiences encourage participants to draw on a range of intelligences as they actively involve their minds and bodies in the processes of dance making, performing and appreciation. This unit provides introductory practical engagement with the theory and practices of dance activity in a variety of community settings. Such experiences are vital for those intending to teach in schools or working in community and youth arts settings.

Aims

This unit aims to develop an understanding of current practice in dance teaching through practical involvement in the planning and implementation of dance workshops in a variety of community contexts.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Apply the principles of choreography, performance and appreciation when planning and implementing learning experiences in dance.
2. Apply your knowledge of safe dance practice when managing and promoting learning in the dance class.
3. Plan for, implement and document dance activities that take account of the learning and development needs of particular participants.
4. Critically reflect on current practice in dance education and your role as a dance teacher in environments conducive to students learning in, about and through dance.

Content

Throughout the practical and collaborative activities of project planning, workshop development and implementation you will be introduced to the current theory and practices in dance teaching which will contribute to your developing understanding of your role as a dance teacher/artist/facilitator and build your skills for working in collaborative learning environments.

Areas to be covered include:
- approaches to workshop and project planning, documentation, developing content and reflection
- approaches to working with educational organizations and community groups
- approaches to responding to the specific needs of participants
- safe practice for practical classes
- approaches to stimulating ideas for teaching

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Learning will occur through lectures and tutorials and practical studio sessions. The focus of teaching and learning is on cooperative learning where students are involved in planning, implementing and reflecting on teaching and workshop/presentation activities. Individually and with others, students will critically reflect on dance practices throughout the unit.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Risk assessment statement

The study in this unit involves physical involvement in creative workshops in dance studios and performance venues. Physical challenges are an inherent part of dance activities. The development of essential risk-management skills that minimises potential injury is a high priority with all lecturing staff. All students are introduced to safe dance principles as life-long learning skills and it is expected that they apply them in this unit.
