Rationale

The sequence of these three project-based performance units is fundamental to this course and allows you to integrate the skills learnt in your technical, artistic and creative fields of learning to the act of performance. These skills are best developed in a range of contexts to enable you to be adaptable and responsive to the performative act of dancing as you develop and become a confident dance practitioner, no matter the field of specialisation.

Aims

This project-based unit provides the context in which you will develop your technique, artistry, communication skills, performance ability and confidence through professionally guided rehearsals, classes, performances and workshops. This unit aims to enable you to utilize, adapt and transform your skills for artistic expression in various performing domains be they theatrical, digital or site specific. These experiences may be collaborative or individually driven under direction from guest and / or resident choreographers and teachers.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. demonstrate a professional work ethic, i.e., excellent punctuality; ability to work and communicate as part of a team; individual ownership of dance material; and respect for choreographers, rehearsal directors, peers and technical team;
2. demonstrate an appropriate and developing sense of style, a developing technical strength, and stamina as a performer;
3. respond effectively to the aesthetic domain of the performance experience both kinaesthetically and intellectually;
4. employ reflective skills as a performer and collaborator.

Content

    This unit may address content such as:
  • the development of new work in the studio or in a digital format and any rehearsals and classes which will be needed in the creation and learning of this work.

  • learning how to develop and deliver workshop material related to the new work learnt in the unit.

  • performing the new work in whatever format is required. This may be for film or in a theatre or somewhere site specific.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Skills relevant to this unit are delivered through practical classes, rehearsals and performances in line with current practices in the creative industries. In all contexts you are encouraged to become reflective practitioners of dance. This unit is delivered by staff and or guest lecturers who are practising choreographers and directors. This authentic learning experience offers you the opportunity to make contact with professional artists and to experience their teaching methods and artistic concerns. In accordance with dance industry standards, every attempt will be made to offer you performance experiences with an appropriate level of challenge.

For Health and Safety reasons, admission to this unit is dependent upon 1/ an appropriate level of physical fitness to prevent injury, and 2/ having no pre-existing injuries or structural/physical issues that would prevent your safe and full participation in all physical activities within this unit. You may be required to confirm your fitness to attempt this unit. In this instance, you will be required to obtain a physiotherapists report before you can participate in this unit. If a report is required, the unit coordinator must receive and approve it before you will be permitted to participate in any classes.

This unit involves compulsory field trips to education facilities off campus. You will be required to find your own way to and from these venues. We will try to organise the field trips to coincide with the designated hours timetabled for this unit but this may not always be possible.

Risk assessment statement

The study in this unit involves physical training in purpose-built dance studios and industry standard performance venues. Physical challenges are an inherent part of dance training. The development of essential risk-management skills that minimise potential injury is a high priority with all lecturing staff. You are taught safe dance principles as life-long learning skills and it is expected that you apply them in this unit. Due to the athletic nature of dance training, the dance discipline provides the necessary duty of care in emergency situations through its first aid and health and safety officers at all venues in which you are required to participate in this unit.
