Rationale

As a dance advocate, whether it be in the role of teacher, academic, performer or creator, you need to have a broad understanding of the art form in all its manifestations. Through the study of the making process, you can have greater access to understanding the communicative powers of dance forms and languages in a range of diverse contexts.

Aims

This unit aims to introduce choreographic devices and strategies that will enrich your abilities and understanding within the dance making process. It also intends to give you an understanding of potential contexts of choreographic work. The unit will develop your ability to constructively analyse and communicate the choreographic process alongside your own artistic concerns and philosophies.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Display skills in manipulating and exploring the elements of dance composition to serve a compositional intention.
2. Describe the choreographic process through participation with the digital medium.
3. Recognise, articulate and critically reflect on elements employed in the work of self and others both in the studio situation and in the local and professional community.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
- motivation/stimulus,
- compositional devices,
- filmic devices,
- movement vocabulary,
- space,
- energy,
- time,
- phrasing
- form and
- style.

Discussion forums will be held in class time and referenced to live performance experiences.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will involve class periods of directed study in composition as well as set tasks for you to work on outside class times. Feedback is given constantly in class time and students with problems will be alerted to them at the earliest opportunity and offered assistance as required. Video will be integrated into the delivery of the unit. Connections to other art forms such as visual art, film and music will be used in the teaching process.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
