In this unit you will learn about the breadth of achievements of research in the Creative Industries (for example, in making visible the creative economy. This knowledge is essential for arts and creative industries managers. You will also have the option to experience deep learning in the theory and practice of one particular creative human capital development technique and qualitative research platform, known as Digital Storytelling.

Rationale
In this unit you will learn about the theory and practice of one particular co-creative media production technique and community media movement, known as Digital Storytelling. In the process of developing your own theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Digital Storytelling you will extend your technological literacy through creative expression. You will learn about how to facilitate and research participatory knowledge creation practices such as co-creative media production in a variety of contexts, and using various methods including ethnographic action research. You will have theoretical and practical lessons in the use of Creative Commons licensing to manage Intellectual Property. In addition to creating your own Digital Story you will have the opportunity to either develop your own proposal for a Digital Storytelling workshop, or to participate in another Digital Storytelling workshop as a participant observer.
Aims
This unit aims to:
1. Develop your understanding of participatory culture and co-creative media by introducing you to the contexts and practices of Digital Storytelling
2. Provide you with skills in using computing technologies and applications for creative expression in the process of creating a Digital Story
3. Provide you with skills and opportunities to apply your theoretical and practical knowledge of Digital Storytelling in the process of EITHER developing your own Digital Storytelling workshop proposal OR participating in another Digital Storytelling workshop as a participant observer and part of a Creative Industries co-creative media research team
4. Provide you with the skills to develop and facilitate co-creative media projects.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Create a Digital Story and facilitate co-creative media practice
2. Apply knowledge of Digital Storytelling, co-creative media and participatory culture to the tasks of evaluating co-creative media practice and designing your own Digital Storytelling workshop
3. Use ethnographic and action research approaches and methods to evaluate, inform and improve professional practice
4. Understand and use Creative Commons licensing to manage intellectual property rights in co-creative media productions.
Content
This unit address content such as:
Digital Storytelling history and contexts; Approaches to Digital Storytelling; Case studies in Digital Storytelling, co-creative media and participatory culture; Ethnographic and action research approaches; Writing a Digital Story; Recording a Digital Story; Image capture for a Digital Story; Using Photoshop, Audacity, Windows Moviemaker (or similar applications); Intellectual Property and the Creative Commons; Propagating Digital Storytelling; Ethics of Digital Storytelling; Strategies for managing creative work.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit may run either in intensive mode or in a traditional semester mode. Students from a range of cohorts may be enrolled in this unit. Typically, semester mode will involve a combination of lectures/seminars/tutorials/workshops. Intensive mode will generally commence with an introductory session and then be taught in an intensive mode. The program will consist of a Digital Storytelling Workshop and a complementary seminar program. It will conclude with a class screening of stories produced in the Workshop and reflective discussion and evaluation of the co-creative media production experience.
Assessment
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Description:
(Summative and Formative) Portfolio comprising an Essay, Digital Story work and Digital Storytelling Project Proposal.
a) Essay - You will define digital storytelling and evaluate one or more uses or applications.
b) Digital Storytelling Project Proposal - You will develop your own proposal for a Digital Storytelling workshop/application OR you will generate field notes based on your involvement in another Digital Storytelling workshop as a participant observer (subject to availability).

c) Digital Story - You will complete a 3 minute Digital Story of your own
