An understanding of the principles of criminal law is of fundamental importance to legal practitioners and to those working within the justice system. This unit will provide students with a basic foundation in criminal law and procedure within the context of the Queensland Criminal Justice System. An understanding of criminal law and procedure is essential to practitioners advising on liability for potentially unlawful acts or ommissions and on the possible punishments and sanctions.
The aim of this unit is, therefore, to provide an introduction to the principles and doctrines of the statutory criminal law of Queensland and how these are modified and extended thorugh the operation of the common law. In doing so, the unit explores the concepts of mens rea and actus reus and instructs students on their use in the elementising of a selection of major offences ,defences and excuses.
