Rationale

The nature of philanthropy appears to be changing with a greater emphasis on the ability of philanthropy to leverage its assets to introduce significant social change of the public good. New ways of doing and understanding challenges the status quo and it is important that such trends are scrutinized.

Aims

This unit will analyse and evaluate new philanthropic trends and introduce the student to critical reflection of such notions. Students will gain the skills to undertake a broad review of philanthropic developments.

Objectives

Unit Objectives

On completing this unit, you will be able to:

1. Critically analyse the literature and apply it to contemporary situations arising in philanthropic structures
2. Communicate ethical dimensions of philanthropic actions and their social consequences
3. Apply high level critical thinking to social and cultural issues involving philanthropy

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage students to fulfil the aims and objectives of the unit as discussed above.

This Unit is taught over 1 introductory class and 3 intensive weekends in conjunction with GSN556.
Intensives are used to provide a basic understanding of the issues, and this understanding will be developed through the use of workshop exercises.

To achieve the objectives of the unit it is essential that students complete the assigned workshop questions prior to the intensive weekend.. Students are also encouraged to challenge themselves with the additional questions prior to each intensive weekend. The introduction will be held in week 1 and intensives in week 3, 4 and 6.
Proper attention to the teaching and learning strategies should enable students to meet the assessment requirements of the unit which are themselves carefully selected to help students to learn. You will be assessed on your developing knowledge, understanding and skills using a range of inter-related assessment methods.

Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation

  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

  • Indirect: to the whole class
  • Assessment name: Project Plan & Annot Bib
    Description: Project Plan and Annotated Bibliography
    Students are required to write a plan and annotated bibliography for their proposed project for Assessment Item 2.
    This Assessment item will allow the student to receive feedback to form the final assignment.
    The essay plan and annotated bibliography should be no longer than 1,000 words (maximum), typed and properly referenced.
    The assignment is required to be submitted via the GSN557 Blackboard site. The Blackboard site has an icon entitled 'Assignment Upload Page'. Students are required to upload their assignment to this particular site and attach the appropriate cover page.

    Assessment name: Applied Project
    Description: Students are to design a program for a foundation seeking to achieve societal change in relation to an issue of their choice.
    The assignment is required to be submitted via the GSN557 Blackboard site. The Blackboard site has an icon entitled 'Assignment Upload Page'. Students are required to upload their assignment this particular site and attach the appropriate cover page.
