Competence in managing is the key to success for any organisation and for any person within that organisation. The knowledge and ability to manage within the global business environment are crucial requirements for today's and tomorrow's managers. This unit introduces the planning, leading, organising and controlling functions of management to elucidate current trends in management practice in the global environment.

Rationale

GSN401 is intended as an introductory unit for the study of general management in the global environment and is part of the core structure of the MBA. It demonstrates and integrates the diversity of elements that are the concerns of managers operating in a global business environment.

Aims

The mission of the MBA and associated programs is to provide world class graduate business education and a stimulating learning experience to current and future business leaders and managers. The aim of this particular unit is to help managers develop an understanding of the key concepts for managing in the complex international business environment.

Objectives

Course Learning Goals (Postgraduate)

The QUT Business School has established the Assurance of Learning (AoL) Goals to meet contemporary industry needs and standards. Achieving these learning outcomes will assist you to meet the desired graduate outcomes set at QUT - aligned with other internationally renowned business schools.

Unit Objectives
On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Recognise the system nature and interconnectedness of organisations. (KS1.1 (MBA 1); CTA2.1 (MBA 4); PC3.1 (MBA 3)).
2. Formulate scenarios or plans that demonstrate an understanding of the complex factors impacting the management of
organisations. (KS1.1 (MBA 8); CTA2.1 (MBA 4); PC3.1 (MBA 3)).
3. Analyse the varied functions and roles of managers. (KS1.1 (MBA 1); PC3.1 (MBA 3)).
4. Explain how global developments can impact upon management and organisations. (KS1.1 (MBA 8); CTA2.1 (MBA 4); PC3.1 (MBA3)).

Content

This unit has been designed to provide a critical overview of key concepts managers need to consider when managing in the global business environment. The unit provides students with the opportunity to apply their own experiences to management theories; to understand the complexity of managing in a global environment and to apply their knowledge and skills to real organisational problems. The unit also provides students with an appreciation of the dimensions of the global business environment in which organisations today operate an understanding of the roles of managers in different organisational settings.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

  • The unit is designed around readings and resource designed to stimulate thinking and debates. Materials will be available from the Blackboard site.

  • There is a commitment to critical inquiry and intellectual debate in regard to the material covered, and students are encouraged to relate the theories and research discussed to situations known to them. Expanding the awareness of Australian management policies and practices into intercultural and international perspectives is fostered.

  • Students are expected to have read the written material before each class meeting, to facilitate discussion.

  • Typically, students enrolling in this unit have extremely varied backgrounds. There is diversity of professional background and sociocultural backgrounds. Students are reminded that this is to their advantage and they have much to learn from one another. To this end, students are strongly encouraged to be sensitive to cultural, gender-related and international issues.
