This unit ties together the fundamental health promotion knowledge and constructs covered in earlier units in the public health subject area. It builds upon this basis to introduce students to the range of strategies available to a health promotion practitioner. The unit promotes an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, as well as related administrative factors. Students undertake a small health promotion project in groups of 3-4. This is an essential field of study for those students who wish to work in a health promotion or related field.

Rationale

This unit ties together the fundamental health promotion knowledge and constructs covered in earlier units in the Public Health subject area. It builds upon this basis to introduce you to the range of health promotion strategies available to practitioners working in health related fields. This is an essential field of study for those who wish to work in a health promotion or related field.

Aims

This unit aims to promote an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of different health promotion approaches, as well as related administrative factors.

Objectives

On completion of this subject, you should be able to:
1. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of recognised health promotion strategies
2. critically assess the factors that influence the selection and application of health promotion strategies, demonstrating advanced and comprehensive knowledge of the criteria for selection
3. state and explain the implications of resource and organisational factors for strategy selection
4. synthesise and critically analyse research relating to health promotion and the application of particular strategies in various settings
5. demonstrate skills in identifying and applying strategies to meet specific behavioural and socio-environmental approaches to health promotion practice.

Content

The course content focuses on methods for planning health promotion programs along with the strategies that may be incorporated into health promotion interventions. Topics include: needs assessment, program planning, writing goals and objectives, evaluation, Ottawa Charter strategies, media strategies, brochures/pamphlets, advocacy and lobbying, policy, legislation, organisational change, and settings approaches.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will be available in internal mode. You will interact with lecturers and guest lecturers, and use texts and a range of recommended readings to learn. You will also participate in lectures and discussions, read and understand health promotion related journal articles and books, and critically evaluate strategies utilised within a given setting to address an identified health issue. Conducting a group presentation describing community partnerships and writing a summary report on this activity will consolidate your learning.

An on-line teaching (Blackboard) page has been established for this unit. The page contains readings associated with the unit that are not from the unit text books. It may also be used to post activities, lecture notes and other course materials for you to access.

Assessment

There are three assessments to be completed throughout the semester.Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning at key points. You will be provided with feedback on each assessment item as you progress through the unit.

You are required to collaborate to conduct a seminar presentation in small groups to report on the various processes and strategies adopted by a selected community partnership.

You will complete a written report critically reflecting on the community partnership you assessed and linking with literature within the field.

Description: Strategies for a Selected Health Issue
You will be required to critically review health promotion practice for a selected health issue in a chosen setting or environment. You will outline strengths and limitations of various strategies and provide recommendations for the future.
