Family law is a rapidly evolving area of law that reflects changing societal values and key developments in government policy. Understandings of 'marriage' and 'family' in contemporary Australian society are altering due to changing societal values. In some respects this has occurred in response to an increase in the number of de-facto and same-sex relationships and the changing configurations of 'family' due to people accessing assisted reproductive technology. It is therefore of critical importance that family law practitioners, people working within the family law system and graduates with an interest in family law have the opportunity to study emerging issues relating to family law at a high and analytically sophisticated level.
