ED79 Teacher-Librarianship IMPORTANT INFORMATION
ED79 Teacher-Librarianship IMPORTANT INFORMATION
This is a specialist degree that prepares teachers for professional leadership as teacher-librarians in primary and secondary schools. You may also be eligible for employment in other sectors of library and information work. To practise as a Teacher-Librarian in Australian schools, graduates also need approved teaching qualifications. The study area is recognised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) for the five year period, March 2012 to March 2017. Graduates are eligible for associate (professional) membership of ALIA and may seek employment in a wide range of library and information contexts, including school libraries. The Master of Education (Teacher-Librarianship) maintains close links with the Australian School Library Association (ASLA).
PROGRESSION: In the Teacher-Librarianship study area you are required to complete one (1) MEd core unit: EDN611 Professional Applications of Research, plus the seven (7) Teacher-Librarianship core units: CLN601 Cyberlearning; CLN603 Designing Spaces for Learning; CLN646 Learning Hubs; CLN647 Youth, Popular Culture, and Texts; CLN650 Information-Learning Nexus; CLN659 Children's Literature: Criticism and Practice; and INN533 Informaton Organisation. Please enrol in CLN646 Learning Hubs in your first semester of study. You are permitted to enrol in a minimum of one (1) unit per semester. At the beginning of each year, it is imperative that you enrol in BOTH semester 1 and semester 2.
INN533: Unlike the other units in ED79, the unit INN533 Information Organisation is delivered from Gardens Point Campus, even though you will likely be studying it in External mode. When you enrol, you will need to select either Gardens Point in the description, or All locations, not Kelvin Grove.
SPP: Integrated into the study area is a Situated Professional Practice (SPP) program across seven (7) of the core units. The SPP program requires 60 hours of on-site activity in library locations, and the compilation of a Professional Portfolio. The purpose of SPP and the Professional Portfolio is to provide students with opportunities to engage in authentic, real-world learning that will enable them to reflect on current professional practices, apply critical thinking and problem-solving, and make connections between theory and practice.
BLUE CARD: Students in Teacher-Librarianship must have current authorisation to work with children as applicable to the State in which you will be doing practicum and site visits. For Queensland schools, you need either a blue card (if you are not a Queensland registered teacher) or an exemption card (if you are a Queensland registered teacher). This authorisation must be obtained before you can undertake your practicum or field studies units, or you may be withdrawn from the relevant unit and incur both academic and financial penalties. Applications forms can be found at www.student.qut.edu.au/forms under Working with Children (blue card) at the bottom of the page.
ORIENTATION: It is recommended that commencing students attend the Master of Education/Graduate Certificate in Education Orientation held at the Kelvin Grove Campus on the first Saturday after orientation week each semester. Orientation will include sessions explaining the course structure and content; discussions on relevant topics by academics and students; general discussion and question time; meetings with the study area coordinators; and sessions on the Library, QUT Blackboard, and academic writing. Details will be available on the Orientation Planner on your QUT Virtual. After accepting your offer, you will receive information about the event via email. Please make sure that you have linked your QUT email to your personal email so you can immediately receive emails when you become a student. If you have not received any information prior to one week before the event, please contact Temora Brooks: temora.brooks@qut.edu.au.
For information about unit delivery types and course rules, please refer to the Current students tab, find your course, and select the Details tab.
